LSU offensive lineman William Clapp (64) and LSU offensive lineman Garrett Brumfield (78) keep Alabama defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand (9) back as LSU quarterback Danny Etling (16) throws to LSU running back Derrius Guice in the first quarter, Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Arkansas just won. LSU just lost. But the win column doesn’t tell the whole story of why the Tigers’ fan base is a whole lot more satisfied right now.LSU’s 24-10 loss last week to Alabama was a whole lot more competitive than many Tigers fans would have expected a month ago, and it might be an indication that Ed Orgeron is starting to get things moving in the right direction.
Not so for the Razorbacks, who needed Cole Kelley’s touchdown run with 1:55 left to survive 39-38 against Coastal Carolina — a team that came in 1-7 and was a four-TD underdog. That’s not the way for Bret Bielema to improve his job security. These teams met infrequently from the 1940s to the 1980s, but since they’ve resumed the series following Arkansas; move to the SEC in 1992, the Tigers and Razorbacks have played some classics. Between 2005 and 2013, eight of the nine games were decided by one score. That includes the 50-48 Arkansas win in 2007, which LSU nonetheless overcame to win the national championship.
The Razorbacks have been known for years as having big, road-grating O-linemen. That may still be the case, but this year, they’re struggling with the whole pass blocking things. The Hogs have allowed 28 sacks (3.1 per game), the worst in the SEC. LSU is sixth nationally at 30 sacks (3.3 per game). This is a bad matchup for Arkansas. Receiver DJ Chark and LSU’s passing offense couldn’t connect enough at Alabama, but the last time he played at home, Chark returned a punt for a TD to spark the biggest comeback in an SEC game in Tiger Stadium history and had 150 yards receiving.
