The Rebels have totaled 701 yards on the ground in the first two games, led by junior Lexington Thomas (341, five touchdowns), and will face a defense this week which is allowing just 3.1 per carry. Freshman quarterback Armani Rogers has completed 21-of-35 for 413 yards and a pair of TDs while adding 168 yards and a score on the ground with 25 attempts. Senior wide receiver Devonte Boyd is the biggest threat for the Rebels with six receptions for 208 yards in the first two games, leaving him 162 receiving yards shy of becoming the second player in school history to reach 3,000.
Although UNLV’s zone-read running scheme differs from Army’s triple option, they are also very committed to the ground game. The Rebels average only 18.5 passing attempts per game compared to 48 rushing attempts for 350.5 yards and 3.5 touchdowns per game. Rebel junior running back Lexington Thomas averages 170.5 rushing yards per game and 9.0 yards per carry. Redshirt freshman quarterback Armani Rogers is also a threat to run with his average of 6.7 yards per carry.
The Rebels’ one hope to make this a contest would be in the passing game, as Ohio State ranks 102nd in the country with 275.0 receiving yards allowed per game. UNLV, though, has averaged only 206.5 passing yards per game and has registered just two touchdown receptions so far in 2017.
